Espanola ends Powassan winning streak in extra time

ESPANOLA, Ont. – A Joshua Rumolo marker off a two-on-one, a couple of minutes into overtime, gave the Espanola Paper Kings a 2-1 triumph over the Powassan Voodoos Wednesday evening in a hard-fought Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest at the Regional Recreation Complex.

Notching the night’s opening tally nearly 12 minutes into the match-up, Spencer Horgan duplicated some crafty stickwork by teammate Lucas Signornetti and cleverly worked his way to the net from the left corner and lifted one over Powassan starter Daniel Dirracolo.

Moving to the second period, Powassan picked up the pace and pressed for the equalizer.

They eventually got the tying goal while on the power play at 14:54 as Jack Kelly buried a chance from close range after Espanola goalkeeper Jake Marois had made a poke check when Thomas Gazich drove to the net for the Voodoos.

Some quality stops at both ends kept the game even through a scoreless third to help send the affair to extra time.

Skating three aside there, the Paper Kings got the game-winner on a play that saw Jonathan Lush cruise down the left wing and found Rumolo driving hard to the net where he went upstairs over the glove of Dirracolo to end it.

Getting the victory was Marois as his efforts helped Espanola improve 11-9-2-2 on the season.

The setback sees an impressive 10-game Voodoos’ winning streak come to a conclusion as they settle for a point in defeat and slip to 18-6-1-0 on the campaign.
