Lavergne leads Express over Eskis for 1st win

ESPANOLA, Ont. – Dominick Lavergne scored twice, including the game-winner, helping the Espanola Express earn their first win of the season as they doubled up the Iroquois Falls Eskis 4-2 Friday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the Regional Recreation Complex.

Both sides were clicking offensively in the opening 20 minutes as they notched two goals apiece with Lavergne and Aaron Roschinsky connecting for Espanola while Shadow Reuben and Ryan Forsyth countered for Iroquois Falls.

Lavergne then added the eventual difference maker 13:45 into the second stanza as he converted during an Express man advantage opportunity.

MacKenzie Aiken added another for the home side with 3:05 left in the session in what would turn out to be the night’s final goal.

Patrick Smith dished out a couple of assists for the Express in their season-opening triumph as they improved to 1-3-0-0 on the year.

Logan Sawka made 35 saves to record the win for Espanola.

Trevor Hawkes started for the 1-5-0-0 Eskis and suffered the loss allowing the four against on 35 attempts while Artem Bortovskiy faced no shots in a brief second period relief stint.
