New-look Beavers 2-0 with home-and-home sweep of Express

BLIND RIVER, Ont. – The new-look Blind River Beavers are 2-0 to begin the 2016-17 Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League season after completing a home-and-home sweep of the Espanola Express Saturday skating to a 6-3 triumph at the Blind River Community Centre.

The Beavers got off to a good start in this one grabbing a 2-0 lead thanks to markers from Tyler Somers and Mark Khull.

Espanola made it 2-1 late in the first as Riley Tilot scored on the power play at 18:51.

Three straight man advantage markers by Blind River in the middle session extended their lead to 5-1 as Anthony Pullicino tallied twice while Zak Lambretch added a solo effort to send the home side on their way.

Somers added another early in the third to extend the Beavers’ cushion.

Up a man Nathan Viberg brought the Express closer at 9:25 while teammate MacKenzie Aiken scored at even strength 23 seconds later in what would be the final goal of the night.

Vincent Robbins and Max Khull doled out two assists for Blind River with Dominick Lavergne doing likewise for Espanola.

The Beavers fired 54 shots on net in the win while the Express had 36.

Myles Hektor was the winning goaltender and Shane Lippincott suffered the loss.
