Voodoos hold on to edge Express

ESPANOLA, Ont. – The Powassan Voodoos built up a three-goal lead into the third period then had to withstand a late comeback bid by the Espanola Express to pull out a 3-2 victory Friday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at the Regional Recreation Complex.

Special teams allowed Powassan to take a 1-0 lead after one period of play as Eric Champagne popped in his 10th of the season during a man advantage opportunity at 6:12.

The Voodoos then extended their cushion to three through 40 minutes on a pair of Daniel Golba markers in the middle session as he scored at even strength at 4:19 then added one on the power play less than three minutes later.

Battling back, Espanola got on the board five minutes into the third as Zachary Decontie picked up his first NOJHL goal.

The Express drew closer thanks to Joel Grandbois’ fifth of the campaign with 11:48 to go in regulation, but Espanola would get no closer as the visitors held on for the road triumph.

Tyler Peters and Jake Staples had two assists each for Powassan in the win with Riley Tilot helping set-up both Express markers.

Mario Cavaliere made 33 saves to earn the decision in the Voodoos net.

Kevin Labelle faced 30 attempts in defeat for Espanola.
