POWASSAN, Ont. – Using a well-balanced attack, the Powassan Voodoos got goals from five different skaters as part of a 5-2 triumph over the Espanola Paper Kings Friday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League meeting at the Powassan Sportplex.
Capitalizing on a five-on-three midway through the first period, the Voodoos’ Marcus Krats punched in a loose puck off a rebound of a Caden Dubreuil point shot.
Espanola tied it at 15:43 when Cameron Menard snagged a turnover deep in Powassan territory and fired it past netminder Tyson Wilcox.
Up a skater late in the first, the Paper Kings took the lead when Carter Drigo banged in a rebound off an up top attempt from teammate Ashton Pitawanakwat.
Coming right back, the home side drew level after Anthony Boyes was set-up in front and finished off a chance into the open corner on Espanola’s Connor Hatfield.
Action in the second stanza saw the Voodoos retake the lead when Dubreuil was sent in alone on a shorthanded breakaway and buried his opportunity over the blocker of Hatfield at 6:48.
Going up by two, Powassan’s Kaleb Ellard collected a loose puck in the slot and fired it low through the legs of the goalkeeper.
Adding another in the final moments of the frame, the Voodoos controlled a face-off deep in Paper Kings’ territory, which allowed Jack Nolan to snap in his seventh of the season at 19:52.
In the third, each club generated chances, but Powassan did their part defensively to secure the home ice win.
The result raises the Voodoos record to 10-8-0-3 and with the loss, Espanola dropped to 8-11-0-2.
