NOJHL names its Players of the Month for September

SUDBURY, Ont. – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL) announced Sunday that Nolan Newton (Greater Sudbury Cubs); Spencer Horgan (Espanola Paper Kings); Daniel Dirracolo (Powassan Voodoos) and Hudson Chitaroni (Greater Sudbury Cubs) have been named its Forward; Defenceman; Goaltender and Rookie of the Month, respectively, for September.

FORWARD OF THE MONTH – NOLAN NEWTON, GREATER SUDBURY CUBS: Averaging three points-per-game in the time frame, Newton piled up 21 in total for the league-leading Cubs on eight goals and 13 assists. He also scored on a shootout opportunity that he had.

The 17-year-old, from French River, Ont., had multi-point outings in each of the seven contests he played during the period, with two of his tallies being game-winners. He also set-up a pair of deciding markers along the way.

Newton heads into October as the NOJHL’s scoring leader with his 21 points.

DEFENCEMAN OF THE MONTH – SPENCER HORGAN, ESPANOLA PAPER KINGS: The second-year blueliner from Bowmanville, Ont., paced all league defencemen in offensive production with 19 points, as he scored six times and dished out 13 assists in eight outings.

Of his half-dozen markers, which tops all NOJHL D-men, two were game-winners for Espanola, which also leads all rearguards.

The 18-year-old Horgan is averaging just over a point-per-game to date in his NOJHL career with 65 in 64 contests.

GOALTENDER OF THE MONTH – DANIEL DIRRACOLO, POWASSAN VOODOOS: A solid opening month of the season for Dirracolo, saw the 18-year-old from Woodbridge, Ont., lead all NOJHL netminders in both goals-against average and save percentage at 1.96 and .939 respectively, while seeing a league-high 367 minutes of game action.

Along with those solid umbers, Dirracolo sported a 4-1-0-1 record in six starts, with one of his victories being a shutout.

Sharing the early NOJHL lead in wins, the Voodoos’ stopper has registered a save mark of .910, or better, in five of his six appearances to date this season.

ROOKIE OF THE MONTH – HUDSON CHITARONI, (F) GREATER SUDBURY CUBS: In Chitaroni’s initial seven games of the 2023-24 campaign, he scored eight times, to lead all NOJHL rookies in that department.

The 16-year-old forward also chipped in with four assists and sees his 12 points placing him second among first-year skaters in the league.

With goals in four straight games, Chitaroni sits just one tally off the overall lead in markers with his eight, in his seven match-ups.
